The Makeda Trust is currently running a number of after school and lunchtime programs in Bermuda.
Summer Performing Arts Workshops
We are offering a summer program in performing arts which reflects the curriculum of The Academy of Performing Arts and Technology (TAPAT) planned to open in 2012 for age 16 students and in 2014 for age 14.
WELCOME TO MAKEDA TRUST
The founders of the Makeda Trust share the vision to create a educational alternative in Bermuda based on the success of the Brit School in London to serve creative youth whose talents are not valued buy our education system. Our mission is to provide an environment that nurtures creativity and extends students opportunities for a high level of academic achievement through the performing arts and its related technologies. We have enacted programs in the public schools which emulate the British BTEC Performing Arts curriculum (Level 2 and Level 3) in areas that we feel are currently missing in Bermuda and are vital to the development of our youth: such as classes in MC, DJ, radio production, technical theater, and a well rounded performing arts education.
In the summer of 2011 we embarked on a nine-week summer workshop which is intended to emulate a normal term within The Academy of Performing Arts and Technology (TAPAT) school year. By allowing young people to learn by building on their creative talent in a cooperative environment, we are demonstrating a new paradigm in education; where students are as much responsible for their learning/teaching as is their coach.
We have up until now focused on the public school youth because they typically do not have the opportunity to go to a performing arts boarding school at middle school. But the programs that we have developed over the past three years are designed for the entire population of Bermuda’s talented youth, public and private. Our next step is to expand into a full-time high school curriculum in the performing arts and its technologies.
